WHAT TYPES OF COVERAGE ARE INCLUDED IN THE GEORGIA TECH POLICY?
The Georgia Tech insurance coverage includes supplemental medical, medical evacuation, repatriation of remains, and security (including political unrest, natural disaster, or other evacuation events) coverage. All students who participate in the Georgia Tech-Lorraine campus abroad program are required to have this insurance plan coverage.
-Students will receive their CISI insurance card and policy information one-month prior to the study abroad program departure via email.
-This medical coverage is intended as a supplement to campus abroad participants’ primary health insurance policies.
-This policy is valid for the duration of the program in which you will participate.
-This policy provides some coverage for injuries sustained or conditions diagnosed while abroad, but that coverage is limited in terms of time and amount, so participants are strongly encouraged to keep their regular health insurance active while abroad.
-In the event of an accident or other medical emergency, which cannot be treated abroad, medical evacuation coverage provides funds to pay for your return to the U.S. In the unfortunate event of a death while abroad, repatriation coverage provides funds to bring remains back to the U.S. In the event of a security emergency, such as political unrest or a natural disaster, this coverage provides services to assist in evacuation to the nearest safe haven or return to the U.S.
Types of insurance services that are not included in Georgia Tech programs
Because of the published policies on program cancellation, students may want to purchase insurance beyond the coverage that Georgia Tech provides. In an effort to help participants understand the types of insurance available for purchase and make decisions about whether or not to purchase these types of insurance, here are brief explanations of the most common types of optional or additional insurance policies.
-Trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance usually provides a reimbursement for unused, non-refundable expenses that were prepaid to a canceled program. When speaking to the insurance provider, please be sure that you are clear about the circumstances under which this insurance will cover you before you purchase coverage.
-Trip delay insurance generally provides funding to help cover costs you incur if your trip is delayed substantially (usually by 12 hours or more).
-Theft insurance usually provides coverage to reimburse you for expenses associated with replacing a stolen passport, camera, or other items stolen while abroad.
-Baggage insurance usually provides a reimbursement for loss, theft, or damage to baggage or personal effects. Some baggage insurance policies also provide reimbursement of expenses incurred if your baggage is delayed and you have to buy clothes and/or other personal items. Please note that the Georgia Tech policy only provides $250 in baggage coverage. If you would like more coverage, please purchase additional coverage separately.
Detailed information on the terms, limitations and costs of these types of insurance is available directly from the companies that sell such policies. We recommend that students research such options and discuss these with their families to make decisions on the best types of coverage beyond the Georgia Tech policy if more insurance is desired.
Please note that Georgia Tech cannot provide recommendations for any particular provider of supplemental insurance.
UPDATE: CISI Insurance Coverage and COVID-19
The University System of Georgia office is closely monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak. Below, they confirm some of the details of our CISI Insurance Coverage.
- We have high-limit medical and evacuation benefits that cover comprehensive care over an extended period. Overlapping benefits, such as “shelter in place,” come into play if an evacuation is necessary, but the process becomes delayed.
- Our policy includes the same coverage in cases where public health officials declare a group exposure (i.e. students who were on a plane or train, or in a building with a someone who got sick).
- While our security rider excludes a pandemic disease, should it lead to situations such as rioting, marshal law, persona non grata, or military incursion that put students, faculty, or staff in harm’s way, there is a $100,000 evacuation benefit per person. The security benefit does not cover students who decide to leave the program on their own before security measures are put in place.
- Our policy will pay up to $2500 per person for expenses incurred while subject to a government-mandated contagious disease quarantine, that delays or prevents travel. Covered costs include: reasonable expenses for lodging and meals, one-way economy airfare to the person’s home country or to re-join their trip, and non-refundable travel arrangements.
